Not as good as the previous model 286A!
Published on 11/23/16 at 16:44Using with RE20, Mackie Mixer, side by side with 286A. New S model sounds harsh and brittle by comparison.
Still a good unit for the money, but I am shopping for another good condition 286A to replace it with. Old model was made in USA, the new one in China, maybe the components are cheaper.

Rather really not bad

4 LED level. It's a bit tight.

COMP
Drive
Intensity
This is where it gets complicated. When you're used to settle a normal comp, it's not very meaningful. In fact, Drive is the common setting ratio and threshold and Intensity, adjustment of attack and release time. The knobs are notched and staggered, but not known precisely or is envaleur absolute (db or ms). Fortunately, 8 LEDs indicate the job comp. It helps.
This system, curiously called "overeasy" is quite confusing at first, but once you understand it, it rolls.
DE-ESSER:
Threshold
Frequency
Not rocket science. Attenuation frequency chosen from the selected threshold.
ENHANCER:
LF DETAIL
HF DETAIL
This is actually a eq. LF DETAIL works els low frequency, HF high. As for the comp, each knob acts on two parameters, the frequency and the gain of the frequency. This is well explained in the manual.
Expander / Gate
easy, a cut-off and a cut slope. But it is subtle, since according to the setting of the one and the other, ca acts as gate to cut the weak signals, or as expander, to address them. Same, it's well explained.
SOUND QUALITY
The sound seems to me a lot, but I've tried that again, with all the mess around. It is not particularly highlight the fine abilities.
No breath, if not abuse the preamp and comp.
The enchancer the de-esser and gate are effective. I have not used the expander.
The comp can be really brutal. Since I have not used it quiet, I can not say how it performs more accurately.
NOTICE GLOBAL
I use it for 2 months again, after passing through ART Pro Channel pounave well.
I use it to death song, and it makes what I expect. Out the voice of blasts and 4 * 12 guitar, bring detail and make you hear the few subtle passages.
I put a TC M300 in the effects loop, it works well. Please note that the loop is placed between the preamp and compressor. So whatever comes of the loop is then processed. To take into account in its settings.
I like the simplicity of the settings (once bizarre terminology acquired), the enhancer and really effective gate (which allows me to use a distortion without feedback)
To see the length, but I think I have to regret my purchase. And as it looks solid, I think I have to redo this choice by a long time.
Very good value for the live. For the studio, plugs will both treatment and one preamp equivalent prices probably will do better.

Preamp really stunning

UTILIZATION
Features are fairly obvious if one takes the time to read the manual. It is necessary to make a number of attempts to understand the subtlety of the manufacturer's proposed adjustments. I found the knobs notched very pleasant to use but the lack of precision screen printing if we want to note the settings.
The other thing that bothers me is the lack of on / off button.

OVERALL OPINION
This preamp is generally classified as compressors from dealers while I rather situate in the preamps or channel strip.
I think he has a real place in a home studio because it combines all the features one needs to record vocals and guitars that most preamps do not have.
You can get an idea by listening to my demos Mupiz, the song is recorded with (http://www.mupiz.com/beher).
After rehearsals for the live, I always worked with a table of the Behringer Xenyx series, we needed more mic inputs. Otherwise, I do not doubt the quality of the product in this config.
