Steinberg today announced that they would no longer continue to develop and maintain the VST 2 software interface but focus efforts on VST 3.
Launched 5 years ago, the VST 2 SDK will soon be closed and should only be available until the end of the year. Future developments will now focus on VST 3 plug-in format, which allows for rendering to VST 2 and AU formats.
Steinberg adds that their applications, such as Cubase, Nuendo and WaveLab, will continue to support VST 2.
