This plug-in has been one of my favorites for a long time. It can be very transparent and is great for when you need to compress, but don't want any sonic influence from the compressor. It's easy to use and has some interesting functions such as the Opto/Electro options for more vintage/modern sounds when you do want your compressor to add a bit of warmth or clarity to your track.

This plug-in is very stable and also decent when it comes to CPU usage. It's suitable for every track but I especially like it on the Master bus and sub-groups like overheads and background vocals. It's very effective for more subtle compression jobs. Also helps for getting a fat bass. Heck it's simply good on everything.

If you're newer to using a compressor with some of these features (such as the Opto/Electro settings I mentioned) there are some great presets that you can A/B to get a feel for what the difference in sound and then make a decision in terms of which would be best for your current project. The other presets are great starting points as well if you need help or even new ideas.

I think once again that if you understand compression, this plug-in is very easy to use and if you don't Waves seems to have decent service although I haven't needed it too often. I've also never looked at the manual so I can't comment on its helpfulness.

I think this plug-in is decently-priced, seeing as it can really handle any instrument or situation. If you can only afford to grab one good compressor for your set-up, I'd probably choose this one.

No particular problem for installation. For permission, I can remember a relative obstacle course. In addition, for Waves products requires an I-Lock key.
So we are dealing with a compressor that can also serve expander, which, in addition to the compression algorithm, also contains a limiter which prevents the signal cross 0dB.
For the compressor, very classic five parameters: Attack, Release, Threshold, Ratio (if less than 1, there is an expander) and Gain. The limiter has no parameter it works automatically when you push the gain (we know that kicks in when the LED above the output indicator lights up.)
For the compressor, there are two algorithms: Opto and Electro. The first emulates the vintage compressors and the second supposed to call more "modern" is more suited to the search for significant gains. We also have the choice between two options: Warm and Smooth. Smooth opts for maximum transparency while Warm deliberately enriched the harmonic frequencies. Do not expect, however, a very dramatic effect. The contribution of Warm is tenuous. In principle, it is especially important when applying compression ratio. Finally you can activate the automatic release control (ARC), which, based on the selected release time, adjust it according to the signal.
Renaissance Compressor comes with 25 presets "factory" that cover most of the uses that can make this plug-in. Also on the site Waves 10 presets created by producer Dave Pensado. Manual a dozen pages in English is not necessary, but it helps to understand how R-Compressor, according to the algorithm that chooses and that's a good idea, he explains precisely what that each of the presets are loaded. Worth to have a look!

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

I use R-Compressor on the Mac Pro (MacOS 10.6.8) with Digital Performer (or occasionally in Peak Pro 5.2). Never had a malfunction. The CPU performance is insignificant. I might as well put one per track if I feel like it.

OVERALL OPINION

I use R-Compressor from time immemorial. In fact, it is one of the first plug-ins that I have acquired.
Since then, I've never finalized mix, whether it is a demo or for trade, without the compressor is on the master track. In this case, I can not say I pushed into a corner, just screed regarding excessive peaks. For this purpose, the preset "Mastering Opto" suits me just by clicking the "Smooth" rather than "warm" and ensuring that the limiter intervenes only moderately. I would not swear that this is the most transparent compressor that is, but if he has a sound I love that sound.
I also used frequently on vocal tracks or bass. , I usually choose the algorithm has "Electro". It works well on the drums, but that in recent years, I have set my heart on the "Rocket Compressor" Stillwell Audio (see my review on this great app.)
Well, I can not say I have tried many other compressors and multiplied comparisons, but have always been completely satisfied with this R-Compressor, either for his or ergonomics, I do not see why I would break the head. It adapts well to all situations, and for me it is the compressor to have if we did that. And to strengthen a little more, the sound engineer with whom I currently work told me that it was also his favorite software compressor .. Still, for me, a thousand times I would do this choice!

Compression has been probably the number one effect ever since The Beatles started using it heavily. There is always a battle between trying to find a compressor that sounds organic and vintage, yet is accurate and fast enough for some of the more dense music out there. To be honest, there are all kinds of compressors out there, and a lot of them are great for specific things. This is a pretty good, overall compressor that can really aid a mix and help everything stand out a bit better. It's a simpler compressor than some of today's digital compressors in that it only has five sliders -- threshold, ratio, gain, release and attack. To use this, simply enable it on whatever buss you want compression on. I never read the manual, but you should be able to figure this out without reading anything.

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

Waves rules for audio plugins. For one, they're always rock solid and super stable. I've never had a single crash while using any Waves plugin, and the same goes for this. The plugin itself doesn't take up much RAM or processing power, which is a big plus for those who tend to have tons of plugins going on inside of their DAWs. The plugin is also cross platform compatible, so just about anybody can use this without any issues at all. There is one issue that I did experience, and that has to do with the actual coding of the plugin and today's recent OSes/DAWs. The plugin is a 32 bit plugin. However, my DAW and OS are 64 bit OSes. For Logic Pro, my go-to DAW, to utilize this, it needs to run a special bridge application. However, I'm not a huge fan of the way Logic implements that feature. I'm hoping that Waves updates these to 64 bit in the future. I've been using the Waves Mercury bundle for the past half a year or so, and it's been absolutely killer.

OVERALL OPINION

I've used this successfully on mixes when I didn't feel like messing with too many options. It delivers a solid sound, and it never let me down when I used it in a mix. However, my go-to compressor for all around mixing is still the standard Logic compressor. I'm just very used to how it works, and I'm able to work quickly with it vs. other compressors out there.

Which feature do you like the most / the least?
I love its simplicity, the fact that you can choose the compressor mode (electronic-opto) and the warmth it provides with the warm function. I use it especially on certain basses and to bind together elements of a drum kit (bass drum, snare, claps...). And you can also place it on the master track.

How would you rate its value for money?
It's expensive, but it's worth it. It's sold on its own and in a bundle. It's part of the Renaissance series, which isn't the best but it's very good and not too resources-intensive.

Based on your experience, would you buy this product again?

I can't say too much about the installation process of the Waves Ltd. Renaissance Compressor as it was already installed on the machine at the studio that I have used it on.  There haven't been any compatibility issues or any other problems with it really that I know about.  The interface of the software isn't hard to follow at all and it only took me a few minutes to understanding everything that is going on here.  In terms of parameters you have sliders for threshold, ratio, gain, attack and release, which is pretty much the five standard parameters that are seen on most compressors. I've never seen the manual for the Waves Ltd. Renaissance Compressor plug-in so I can't say too much about it, but I don't think that one is necessary because of how easy the interface is to follow.


SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

I've never had any problems running this plug-in and I have been able to run a bunch of them within a single session if I want to.  I use the Waves Ltd. Renaissance Compressor on an Apple G5 that runs with a Pro Tools HD system and this system is definitely enough for me to be able to run this plug-in effectively.  Even if you have Pro Tools LE I think that if your computer is fast enough that you generally shouldn't have a problem with running this plug-in as it won't take up much processing power. 


OVERALL OPINION

I've been using the Waves Ltd. Renaissance Compressor for about two years and it is definitely a nice compression plug-in.  Waves is known for making some of the best plug-ins out there as they are realistic sounding, which is the case with this one.  While it isn't my favorite plug-in compression out there, I do find myself using it a lot as it has a certain sound that makes it good for drums and guitars amongst other things.  The price isn't bad and is a great deal if you buy this within the Renaissance bundle.  If you are in the market for a nice compression plug-in that won't break the bank, I would definitely recommend looking at Waves Ltd. Renaissance Compressor.
