i'm a drummer .. trying to record my band
on the pearl drummers forum someone said something about using an ardvark or an edirol or motu from the outs on a mixer and putting each part on the mixer into a different slot on the interface. and it will get all seperate tracks on a computer i think.
it's $300 cheaper than the motu, and i need a usb not firewire because i'll be on my laptop and i don't want to f**k with installing a firewire port.
what do you think any suggestions

that holds true only to the amount of inserts you have on the interface. the link doesn't work for me, but seeing as its USB, it can probably only do up to 4 (maybe it was 6) inputs at the same time. Thats the limit of USB. That means you can only record 4 tracks at the same time, probably not enough for the drums. Firewire can give you over 8 at the same time (i think the max is 16?), and its definitly worth it to install it. I went for USB, and now wish i had firewire, just for the drum recording. my only solution now is to route the drums through a pre-mixer, simplifying it to 4 tracks.
the pearl drummers forum is right, although i dont see the need for a premixer. you can just go straight to the interface if you want. tell me if i'm wrong, i just dont do it this way.
just install firewire, spend the money on an interface w/ alot of inputs aka I/O. trust me, its worth it in the long run.
It actually is a USB 2.0 device and so it will transmit as much data as a firewire device. I think it is a decent option. In order to record a number of tracks you always need some sort of preamp before going into the interface. The only time this is not true is when the interface includes a pre-amp. The UA-101 has two preamps built in, but not enough for a drum set. You would have to add an external mixer to this interface in order to provide preamplification to all the mics.
Another solution that I really like is the Presonus Firepod https://www.presonus.com/firepod.html - it's nice because it has 8 preamps built in - you can go direct from your mics and it come with cubase LE software. But again, it's back to firewire - you might have to bite the bullet and just install firewire - it's pretty cheap these days. Edirol has the only USB 2.0 device that I am aware of right - maybe alesis has one, but I'm not sure.
Hope that helps - happy recording!
