I was looking to replace a certe excellent but a little old DIGI 001 Digidesign especially because of the inability to connect this card on a laptop. I wanted to find the same range of connection and the same quality preamp without neutral wind, etc.. There is no 36 such cards on the market. The MOTU is well positioned in price / quality ratio. I heard the good of the Presonus FIREBOX but the number of entries seemed right.
I also bought this card for the DSP which seems less CPU seek another card and it was an argument of weight for my old laptop.
I use the MOTU as home-made studio for guitars, vocals, bass, synth, etc.. I have no preamp or console because I believe that the MOTU preamp is sufficient to themselves and the fact that it can act as a standalone mixer offered me to buy a console.
My config is divided between a Dell P4 3GHz, 512 RAM and an old-Fujitsu laptop running at only 1.88 ghz and 256 RAM. When I asked if the MOTU fonctionneriat on it, the stores told me that yes, "which is the soft food, not the map" ... rather a good sign!
UTILIZATION
By installing the MOTU I had fond memories for long sessions at the con with the old stuff. They really rose to that level. I must say that my DIGI OO1 had six years and I did not have any other card in the meantime.
I did not even used the CD that came and went the last chopper drivers on the MOTU site. Instalation without any worries, being careful to start with first install the drivers, click to accept a few here and there, restart, once registry cleaning, plug and presto it worked first time.
I see guys on the forum galèreent with stories of IRQ conflicts in the bios where I do not know what ... damage, I had no trouble ... Perhaps the fact that my PC is not a gas plant and I customized runs on the Intel base. When buying, keep hanging on the compatibility between the card and PC components. We often pale with exotic configs hacked in every sense.
Then, for the config, it's about setting the soft ... Just know it.
These remarks are also valid on the laptop, no worries ... but I plan to use it only to the taking off solo ... logically not make a whole mixes old nanard like that and knees.
In any case no cracking on 2, once the adjustments made.
But ... at the beginning is not easy to navigate their stories mix console thing, and this especially as they damn manual is in English and I had beautiful send an email to the importer and to MOTU, I see nothing coming. In my opinion it is not yet translated. It is unacceptable these days to buy stuff for that price and not having a French manual. So, to date, I does not use all the possibilities of MOTU. But hey, we are in the world of computer music and the world of computer music is the démerder first.
So I stick 5 because although it works perfect, hello to any dip because of the manual in English.
GETTING STARTED
No problems with the drivers, they seem very stable.
I do not know if they are updated ... and then, as long as it works.
I have run 2 to 3 milliseconds of latency input and output ... Finally! It's totally transparent.
For the number of tracks, I have not done testing with a lot of runs.
Finally, the most important and then I can compare that against my DIGI 001 which was already very good. The SOUND!
It's pretty amazing how the MOTU is transparent. I rapprelle registry renewal of my debut digital 8-track Korg, it was clean but cold. Here, the sound is warm, clear, precise, detailed ... and especially no breath and that's excellent. I think the entries are all symmetrical. DIGI on, I used to spend my Jazz Bass with plugs for obtenr sound I wanted. And at a time I bypassed the plugs and found the direct sound of the bass through the preamp is simply excellent. Returning to the essence of sound with such a device.
A surprising detail caught my old sheets and listening again badly encoded MP3. The DIGI, treble sounded logically wrong and there on the MOTU, it does not forgive. One senses immediately that we have a much higher definition, the defects do not pass. The rendering is very analytical and transcribed all the errors of mix and mastering. I have not yet done so to mix with the MOTU, but I know I will enjoy to remix projects for former chopper defects. In short, it's precision and sense immediately that we are not dealing with the beginner stuff.
OVERALL OPINION
One month
Plus:
- The high definition sound, transparent preamps
The potential for mix-standalone (what joy to be able to connect without hearing all the fan of the PC!)
- The seriousness in building
- One arm, one rule and it works
Minimum:
- French manual not doing that ls routing options are not to enter évideentes
MOTU's reputation is second to none. It is sometimes the scope of spending a little more for such quality and yet, I find that the price of this card is fully justified.
