Scarlett 2i2 3rd generation and Thunderbolt

Relatively new Scarlett 2i2 user, and buying a new Mac with mostly Thunderbolt ports. I am new to Thunderbolt as well, so the obvious question: can I connect the Scarlett to the Mac with a Thunderbolt cable, and is there any advantage to doing this? Thanks in advance.
