« A transistor-killer for the apartment »
Published on 06/10/13 at 03:21Everything has been said about this little bagpipe, the V5 is simply the small amp ideal home.
He
- 5 watts (it is more than enough) very manageable apartment with HP 8 inches a low yield that can not keep up with these 5 watts
- An attenuator has three positions 0.1, 1 and 5 watts so
- A headphone output (note the large size 6.35 jack, which suits me is the jack of my Beyer Dynamic, but it takes a small adapter for headphones fashion with minijacks)
Loupiote side it's classic with a 12AX7 preamp and EL84 power.
All with a tone, a gain and a volume that can be familiar with the gadget and shape the sound a bit ("a little" because the sound is still clear of vintage primarily for metal and other beatings he'll have use moult pedals)
UTILIZATION
It is small and relatively heavy (10kgs) which reassures its manufacturing quality.
I am not qualified to talk about electronics, but for the rest, it's tough. The buttons are not cheap, either handle only the jacks when viewed closely betray the race to the economy (it even says Fender has jacks dropping on some models). Clearly the V5 is a small Chinese cheap stuff that does not look like a small cheap Chinese stuff.
It is small but lousy, with entrances on each side which is that in practice it is much thicker than its technical specifications and may suggest that we can not push against a wall ..
Explanation: The guitar plugs into the front panel, the power comes from the rear (and not exceed evil), the headphone jack is at the back too. Clearly in practice it adds easy three or four inches in thickness bagpipes. The volume and gain are controlled from the front but from the rear attenuator.
SOUNDS
I use a Epiphone Elitist es335 equipped with good humbuckers and a Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin with P90
The sound is very good, I had one before CUB10 Laney and again before a Champ12 Fender, the sound of V5 is a bit in between. Thicker than the Laney but less fat than Champ.
A 0.1 Watts is little hope of Crunch reasonable volume, well almost 0.1 Watts because it can still a lot of noise.
Short for a personal use / apartment the sound is very good, pleasant, not cramped (and I mean the original HP)
The sound headphones are honest enough (we're not talking big saturation are buzzing ears) and can play quiet quietly keeping the dynamics of a small lamp with a cool sound. I do not know if there is a speaker simulation inside it, but with my headphone Beyer Dynamics DT150 is really good, certainly more than enough given my level.
OVERALL OPINION
If we consider that it is 150 euros new and secondhand 100 is frankly a matter
This is the price of a pedal and the sound is very nice and the living dynamic side lamps (although it is intended for home use .. / appart..ou the usual medication is rather "take therefore a transistor ")
Wholesale apartment for about 160 euros there are four options:
- The conventional transistor
- The transistor modeling (Fender Mustang ..)
- The V5 and VHT Special 6
The conventional transistor is standout (even at the price)
Modeling is more versatile, but not this side of the small living V5
The VHT Special 6 is top but strong in the apartment (no attenuator, headphone output), but it is wired in point by point and DIY love it.
The V5 is much higher than a transistor, it does not have the versatility of a Mustang, but it has a really cool sound more (and higher quality of manufacturing elsewhere)
I would do without hesitation that choice (given the price ..) and it also makes you want to add to it a V22 that has what I understand is even bigger
